Severe Weather and Roofing in the Newark Area

Weather forecasts and severe-storm alerts for Licking County come out of the NWS Wilmington forecast office. NOAA records show over 1,500 confirmed tornadoes in Ohio since 1950. Damaging wind events happen far more often than tornadoes. Licking County's tornado count runs slightly below the Ohio state average, but the area has multiple documented severe weather events that caused roof damage.

Two events stand out for Newark:

On April 20, 2011, an EF1 tornado touched down six miles east-southeast of Newark, on Brushy Fork Road southeast of Brownsville Road. The National Weather Service estimated maximum wind speeds of 109 mph. A residence on Brushy Fork Road took roof damage. A mobile home on the same road was destroyed. Trees up to 18 inches in diameter were uprooted along the path.

On June 22, 1986, a tornado moved across the south side of Newark around 10:30 PM with a two-mile path. Several homes took roof damage. A church at the intersection of Willwood Street and Poplar Street was destroyed.

Severe weather events like the 2011 tornado don't hit Newark every year. The vast majority of roofing work we do here is driven by accumulated wear, including years of summer storms, winter freeze-thaw cycles, and small wind events that did not make the news. By the time a roof shows visible damage, the cause is a slow decline rather than one catastrophic event.

Permits and Inspections in Newark

Permits for roof replacement inside Newark city limits are issued by the City of Newark Engineering and Zoning Department. The department is located at City Hall, 40 W. Main Street, Newark, OH 43055. The city office line is (740) 670-7500. Engineering and Zoning handles the permit application and schedules the final inspection.

We file the permit with the City of Newark on behalf of the homeowner, so there's no separate paperwork on your end. Once the install is complete, the city sends an inspector out to close the permit. We hand you the final paperwork after that inspection passes, which is what you'll want for any future insurance claim or home sale.

Outside Newark city limits but still inside Licking County, the Licking County Building Department handles permits. We handle filing with whichever office has jurisdiction over your property.

Newark Frequently Asked Roofing Questions

Q:How quickly can you schedule an inspection in Newark?

A:Newark inspections schedule within a few business days. After a documented storm in Licking County, response times drop to 24 to 48 hours.

Q:Is a permit required to replace a roof in Newark?

A:Yes. Inside Newark city limits, the Engineering and Zoning Department at 40 W. Main Street issues the permit. Outside city limits but inside Licking County, the county Building Department handles it. We file the paperwork on every job, with no additional fee for the filing.

Q:How long does a roof replacement take?

A:Most roof replacements only take one day on a Newark home. Larger or more complicated houses might run into a second day. The written estimate spells out the projected schedule.

Q:Why don't you use subcontractors?

A:None of the work on your Newark roof is handed off to a third party. Steve Yoder or a sales rep does the in-person inspection and writes the estimate. Our own Amish crews handle the install work. There is no outside contractor at any stage of the project. It keeps the quality bar in one place, ours. It removes the layer of communication problems that comes with a subcontracted job. And it means anything that comes up after the install gets answered by the same company that did the work.

Q:Do you handle insurance claims for storm damage?

A:Yes. After a storm, we inspect your Newark roof, photograph the damage in detail, and meet your insurance adjuster on site for the walk-through. Ohio policies vary on filing windows, so confirm your specific coverage shortly after any documented storm.

Q:How do I know if I need a repair or a full replacement?

A:Roofs under 15 years old with localized damage are good repair candidates. Roofs over 20 years, or roofs showing widespread granule loss, multiple leak points, or structural sagging, are replacement candidates. Steve or a sales rep gives you the specific recommendation after walking the roof.
