Severe Weather and Roofing in the Athens Area

Athens is covered by the National Weather Service Charleston, West Virginia forecast office. Tornadoes are rare in this part of southeastern Ohio. Per the NWS Charleston damage survey, the August 2023 event was only the seventh documented tornado in Athens County and the first since 2018. When severe weather does come through, the hilly terrain channels wind in ways that can concentrate damage on specific ridgelines.

August 12, 2023. An EF1 tornado touched down southeast of Athens at 7:33 PM, with peak winds of 100 mph. The path started near Angel Ridge Road, tracked east-northeast across Gura Road, Long Run Road, and North Coolville Ridge Road, and lifted past Kincade Road. The total path length was 2.33 miles, with a maximum width of 300 yards. The worst damage occurred in a 300-yard-wide swath along Long Run Road. Damage was limited to snapped and uprooted trees and several snapped power poles.

September 16, 2010. A tornado was confirmed about four miles south of Nelsonville in Athens County. Along the same storm track, a strong downburst developed to the southeast. Near The Plains, winds reached around 100 mph. Near Athens itself, winds ran from 80 to 100 mph in the downburst zone.

The 2023 EF1 was only the seventh confirmed tornado in Athens County going back through the NWS record. Most Athens roof work comes from a different source entirely. We see the residue of long Appalachian winters, hill-channeled wind events that didn't generate a warning, and decades of moisture exposure on slopes where drainage is complicated.

Permits and Inspections in Athens

Permits inside the City of Athens are handled by the Office of Code Enforcement and Community Development at 28 Curran Drive, Athens, OH 45701. Reach the office at (740) 592-3306. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

On any Athens project that needs a permit, Platinum handles the paperwork. Nothing about the permit ends up on your plate. After the install, the city inspector closes the permit out. We give you the final paperwork, which is what matters for any future insurance claim, refinance, or home sale.

Athens County itself has not adopted county-wide zoning regulations, so outside Athens city limits the requirements come down to subdivision and floodplain rules administered by the County Planner. We confirm jurisdiction before any work starts and file with the appropriate office, whether that is the city or the county.

Athens Frequently Asked Roofing Questions

Q:How quickly can a roof inspection be set up in Athens?

A:We schedule Athens-area inspections within a few business days. After a confirmed storm event in Athens County, we prioritize the call and aim for next-day response.

Q:Do roof replacements in Athens need a permit?

A:For properties inside Athens city limits, permitting goes through the Office of Code Enforcement at 28 Curran Drive. Athens County has not adopted county-wide zoning, so outside city limits the permit requirements are limited to subdivision and floodplain rules. We confirm jurisdiction and file the permit when one is required, at no additional charge.

Q:How long should a roof replacement take?

A:Most Athens roof replacements finish in one day. Larger or more complicated homes might need two. The timeline appears in the written estimate.

Q:Who actually installs the roof — your team or subs?

A:Our Athens jobs run on Platinum people only. Estimates come from Steve Yoder or a member of our sales team, written at the property during the inspection. The Amish roofing crews do the installation. No outside labor is involved at any stage of the project. One company sets the standard on every job. One company answers the phone when you call afterward. And the work that gets installed on your home comes from people who answer directly to Platinum, not to a separate business with its own incentives.

Q:Does Platinum work with insurance on storm damage claims?

A:Yes. We come out after the storm, document everything with photographs, and walk the roof with your insurance adjuster on site. Ohio policy terms vary, so check your filing deadlines shortly after any documented storm event.

Q:What's the difference between a repair and a full replacement?

A:Under 15 with damage in one area: repair candidate. Over 20, or showing widespread granule loss, multiple leak points, or sagging: replacement candidate. The in-person inspection from Steve or a sales rep nails down which applies.
