Severe Weather and Roofing in the Wheeling Area

NWS Pittsburgh handles Wheeling's forecasts and severe weather warnings. Tornado activity is uncommon in this part of West Virginia. According to NWS Pittsburgh, Ohio County recorded only one tornado from 1950 through 2021. That changed in August 2022.

August 1, 2022. An EF2 tornado touched down around 6:30 PM near Dallas, West Virginia, just east of Wheeling proper. Maximum sustained winds were estimated at 110 to 120 mph. The path was nearly two miles long and up to 400 yards wide. The tornado tore through Ohio County, Marshall County, and into Washington County, Pennsylvania.

The National Weather Service damage survey documented significant losses. A barn at the touchdown site was destroyed. A camper on the same property was overturned. A 160-year-old barn on Rock Valley Farm Road had its roof torn off. The Dallas United Methodist Church parsonage suffered major roof damage. Numerous trees were snapped or uprooted, and 400 to 500 residents lost power initially.

This was the first confirmed tornado in Marshall County in 20 years. As one NWS meteorologist put it during the damage survey, the Ohio River disrupts the formation of tornadoes coming in from the west, which is why severe tornado events in this area are rare.

Tornadoes are unusual in Wheeling. The roofs we replace in Ohio and Marshall counties are far more often the result of accumulated wear over time rather than a single severe weather event. Decades of wind, hail, and freeze-thaw cycles produce the conditions we document during most of our inspections. The 2022 EF2 is the exception, not the pattern, but the pattern still wears out roofs on its own schedule.

Permits and Inspections in Wheeling

Roof replacement inside Wheeling city limits requires a permit from the City of Wheeling Building & Planning Department. The department is located at 1500 Chapline Street, Wheeling, WV 26003. The phone number is (304) 234-3601.

On a Wheeling project, we handle the permit paperwork ourselves. You don't need to contact the Building and Planning Department. After the install, the city's inspector comes out to close the permit. We deliver the closeout documentation to you, which matters for any future insurance claim, refinance, or sale of the home.

Wheeling's surrounding county territory in Ohio County or Marshall County is permitted through the county itself. Platinum files the paperwork regardless of which jurisdiction applies.

Wheeling Frequently Asked Roofing Questions

Q:When can a Wheeling roof inspection be scheduled?

A:We schedule Wheeling-area inspections within a few business days of the call. Post-storm calls from Ohio County or Marshall County move to the front of the queue, often same day or next day.

Q:Does a Wheeling roof replacement require a permit?

A:Yes. Inside Wheeling city limits, the Building & Planning Department at 1500 Chapline Street issues permits. Outside the city in Ohio or Marshall counties, permitting goes through the county itself. Platinum files the permit on every project, with no separate charge for the filing. If your home is in one of Wheeling's six historic districts, the Historic Landmarks Commission may also need to review the project before work begins. We handle that review when it applies.

Q:How many days does a roof replacement take?

A:Single-day completion is the norm for a Wheeling roof replacement. Larger or more complicated houses may run into a second day. The schedule appears in your written estimate.

Q:Do any subcontractors work on the roof?

A:On a Wheeling roof project, every person on the job answers to Platinum. The estimate is written by the owner or a sales rep, in person at the property. The install is done by our Amish roofing crews. There are no subcontractors at any stage. The standards stay the same across every job. Communication runs through Platinum, not through a chain of subcontractors. And if anything needs follow-up after the install, the same people who did the work answer the question.

Q:Do you help with insurance claims after storm damage?

A:Yes. We perform the post-storm inspection, photograph all damage, and walk the roof with your insurance adjuster when they arrive. West Virginia policies vary on filing windows, so check your specific terms shortly after any documented storm event.

Q:Should I repair or replace my roof?

A:A roof under 15 with damage in one specific area is a repair situation. A roof over 20, or one with widespread granule loss, multiple leak points, or visible sagging, is a replacement situation. Steve or your sales rep gives the specific call after the in-person inspection.
